The long awaited and highly publicise D-Day -The Big Sunday event  organised by the Newham Council and the Civic Partnership finally took place 5TH February, 20006 at the spacious, luxurious and well renowned Excel centre, Docklands, from 10am to 5pm.

The two hundred and fifty thousand pounds (£250,000) one day Community event was full of pump and pageantry, with over 32,000 people from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures trooped to this magnificent event to listen to the Olympic experts, business advisors, and live performances, socialise with friends and families, and to meet old friends.

There were almost five hundred (500) businesses, community and voluntary organisations displaying their goods and services. Performing acts such as the pop group Liberty X, Anoton Du Beke and Eric Boag from the TV show- strictly come dancing; Chico and Brenda from the reality TV show X Factor also were on the bill. The whole point of the event is to celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games which will be hosted in Newham, London and the benefit to the Newham community.

In a letter to Sir Robin Wales, chair of New ham Civic Partnership, which hosted the event, Mr Blair said: “The Big Sunday is an excellent idea as it gives the people of Newham the opportunity to find out just how the Olympics will help transform the borough and what they can do to help the Games be a success.”
